The Bryant University Bulldogs took to the transfer portal on Tuesday night, landing former St. Bonaventure forward Barry Evans to kick off head coach Phil Martelli Jr.’s first offseason with the program.
A 6’8”, 215-pound rising junior from Baltimore, Maryland, Evans comes to Smithfield with 65 career games played, including 24 starts. He holds career averages of 3.2 points and 4.3 rebounds on 51.4% shooting, with freakish athleticism and two years of eligibility remaining- a positive from a maturation standpoint.
Evans started 21/32 games for the Bonnies during his freshman season in 2022-23, with 3 PPG and 3.3 RPG while holding a 44.9% mark from the field. Despite cracking the opening rotation in just 3 of his 33 appearances this past year, his stats improved, upping his per-game averages to 3.3 PPG and 5 RPG and becoming a more efficient scorer- converting 59.3% of his shot (48/81), including a 69.5% (41/59) clip from inside the arc.
The move marks Bryant’s first foray into the transfer portal this offseason- important for a team that has lost Sherif Gross-Bullock, Doug Edert, and Miles Latimer to graduation and has several portal entrants in Daniel Rivera, Rafael Pinzon, Tyler Brelsford, Todd Rochelle, and Greg Cantwell.
Such losses hurt, but college basketball is about taking them in stride and reloading rather than rebuilding. And now, Phil Martelli Jr. adds a versatile wing to his arsenal, offering the team a nice boost next to returning superstar Earl Timberlake as the program looks to remain near the top of the America East standings.
