The Vault Files: Brown Head Coach Mike Martin
Hear from the leader of the Bears ahead of summer workouts
In our latest edition of The Vault Files, Brown University men’s basketball coach Mike Martin sits down with Nathan Mook to discuss his coaching tenure on the East Side of Providence.
A Brown alum, Martin appeared in 98 contests (76 starts) for the Bears from 2000-2004, averaging 7.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists for his career while converting 143 of 371 three-point tries (38.5%). He left school as a member of one of the program's most winningest classes, with Brown earning a 63-45 (.583) overall, including a 39-17 mark in Ivy League play during his collegiate years.
After one year of professional basketball in 2004-05 spent with Dart Killester, an Irish professional basketball club, Martin returned to Providence's East Side in 2005-06 as an assistant coach. He would serve on the staff of Ivy League foe Penn in a similar capacity from 2006-12 before returning to his old stomping grounds once again, being named the head coach at his alma mater on May 31st, 2012.
Fast-forward some time, and Martin is now the winningest coach in Bears history, with 148 victories. This past season, he led the Bears from an abysmal 6-17 start to the season to a seven-game winning streak, earning the fourth and final spot in Ivy Madness- the league's postseason tournament- and within moments of the Bear's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986.
In short, Martin has reshaped the culture at his alma mater, transforming the program from an Ivy League footnote to a talent-laden, perennial league contender. Hear more from him in the interview below:
