The Vault Files: Richmond Head Coach Chris Mooney
On what was a wild season for the Spiders in 2023-24- and what to expect in the new league year

The latest edition of The Vault Report features another exclusive interview from Nathan Mook, who chats with University of Richmond men's head basketball coach Chris Mooney.
The 2024-25 season will mark the twentieth for Mooney as the Spiders’ head coach, making him the longest-tenured head coach in the Atlantic 10 Conference and tied for tenth amongst all active Division I head coaches in the length of stay.
Richmond has an overall record of 350-272 (.563) under Mooney, with three NCAA Tournament appearances- via at-large berth in 2009-10 and two more by winning the A10 Conference Postseason Tournament Championship (2010-11 and 2021-22). The Spiders have had just three losing seasons under his watch: the first two coming in his first and second years at the helm (13-17 in 2005-06; 8-22 in 2006-07), and the other being in 2022-23, when the Spiders were 15-18. Mooney, however, did not see the end of this season, as he stepped away from the team in mid-February 2023 due to heart surgery.
With his health in order, Richmond’s leader made his return courtside this past year. As a result, the Spiders earned their first-ever A10 regular season title, finishing 23-10 overall and 15-3 in conference play. The honor was shared with Loyola-Chicago, who finished with the same record for the year and in conference play. At the end of the season, Mooney earned Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors, which holds additional merit considering all he had been through in the past year.
Now, with Mooney set to celebrate two decades of excellence with the Spiders, hear from him directly as he talks about what fans should expect from Richmond during this upcoming season:
